Ludlow, John Malcolm Forbes
- Ludlow, John Malcolm Forbes
(1821–1911)
Philanthropist and Educator.
Ludlow was educated in France and then returned to England for legal training. A friend of F.D. maurice, he was in Paris during the 1848 Revolution and he declared in a letter ‘the new socialism must be Christianised’. With Maurice, he edited the journal Politics for the People and later, by himself, the Christian Socialist. Today he is remembered as the founder of the Christian Socialist movement. He was involved in the setting up of the Working Men’s College in London and he taught there for many years. Throughout his life, he was convinced that political emancipation must be accompanied by spiritual education and, as a result of his work, many of the clergy became interested in social welfare issues.
